With so many avenues to pursue, I decided to use the most basic elements of my subjects as a starting place. I recreated the lamp and wind turbine in Illustrator and using the cord, connected the two. This gave me a very literal graphic and ultimately not my favorite, but I think it was a necessary part of this exercise. I created each logo in black and white first, then went back and added color. This technique for logo creation was taught to me years ago and has two benefits; first it enables the designer to focus on line and shape and second, most logos will at some point need to be printed without color. A logo that is dependent on color for legibility would not be a viable business answer.

The next step was to combine the individual parts into one concept. The base of the lamp was a natural fit as the base of the wind turbine.

I determined that the lamp shade was not a critical piece to the logo. Of the five logo iterations, I feel this one is the most successful due to the instant readability of the turbine wind blades, the lamp base, and cord.

For the last two logos, I replaced the wind turbine with a flower. The flower is a symbol of a earth that can flourish with renewable energy. For the flower above, I used the the warp effect in Illustrator which gives the flower the feeling of movement. The last logo option below removes the entire lamp leaving only the cord.
